We have been very busy since returning to school after the holidays. Since we have come back to school we have finished learning the alphabet, begun learning about our teen numbers, kicked off the school-wide "Royals Reading Challenge", and learned about diversity from Martin Luther King Jr.
Last Friday, we had a surprise visit by the famous Royals "W" Man, Kaycee. He shared with us his love for reading and even read "The Night the World Turned Blue" to kick off the reading challenge. Kaycee has challenged both the students and staff to read 20 books before we dismiss for summer break. Roughly that is 4 books per month, similar to what we had been doing with our monthly reading reports. I will be sending home 4 "book reports" to fill out as you read them for the month of January (came home today). Since this challenge has started a bit later than we normally would I am extending the January time frame until Feb. 10th. If your child brings back all four book reports completed they will still receive their Gambinos and Pizza Hut coupons. Each time the students finish a book they will be able to decorate a book to add it to the hallway for the reading challenge. We were mid-"LETS GO ROYALS" chant in this picture! :) Still priceless to see their excitement to not only meet him, but also to begin reading! Our picture with Kaycee was even on the front page of the Tonganoxie Mirror!!

Tuesday we spent the day talking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and how he has impacted our daily lives by teaching us to love one another and embrace the things that make us different from each other. Mrs. Parker invited all of the kindergarteners into her room for an "egg" demonstration. After looking at different eggs that had various colors (white, brown, green, blue), sizes(large, small)and even noticeable imperfections (bumps or cracks), Mrs. Parker cracked open each egg and we noticed something incredible.....no matter what the outside of the egg looked like each egg had the same "slimy" clear liquid and the same yellow yoke. The kids were amazed and we had a great discussion about how boring our lives would be if we all looked the same and had the same talents. At the end of the day the students were chanting Martin Luther King Jr. similar to that of our beloved Royals chant.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held February 3rd and 4th. We will follow the same "schedule" as the fall conferences which means your conference will be the same day (Wednesday or Thursday) as in the fall and at the same time. Reminder notes are in your child's backpack today. Please contact the office if your assigned time doesn't work. I am looking forward to sharing your child's progress with you!
Valentines Party: Due to the limited parking space at our beautiful new school, we have decided to stagger our Valentines parties based upon grade level. The kindergarten parties will be Friday, February 12th at 8:30 and parents will need to leave by 9:30 so that we can "clear" the parking lot before the next group of parents come for their 10:00 parties in the older grade levels. I will be in touch with those of you who volunteered to help with our Valentines party.
TES Carnival: Each year we have a school wide carnival and this year the date is Saturday February 27th. You should have received information about it today in their backpack, but more information will be coming home soon. We are teaming up with Miss Nicholson's Kindergarten class to gather KU items for the silent auction, so you can start collecting items to donate!
Enjoy your weekend!!
